The Doll House

This dollhouse belonged to my daughters, purchased for Christmas 1984. Lyle painted the exterior with the colorscheme of the house we lived in. We never had the time to do anything with the interior, and they happily played with it in it's unfinished form.

After they grew up, each came to me and said Mom, don't get rid of that dollhouse. Neither came to claim it though, and I still had it when COVID hit. After the linen closet was cleaned and organied, I decided to take on the dollhouse.

I put up "Stick up Lights" in each room. They are battery powered and controled with a small remote.

It's an odd size. Wallpaper and floor coverings are widely available commercially for the smaller size, but no so for this. I patched together computer printouts of wall paper and made a first pass at finishing the interior.

When it began to fall apart I renewed my efforts and set a goal of wall coverings, flooring and curtains for each of the four room. There is more that can be done with it, but my patience is gone for now.

The kitchen has tiles that I laser cut and painted to match the chair cushions and counter tops. The wall covering is contact paper. I'm very satified with the curtains. The rod rests on cuphooks screwed into the wall.

The appliances and cabinets are Kitchen Littles, a toy from the 90s. They fit perfect. The stove and fridge both light up when the door is opened. The fridge makes noise when the ice dispense lever is pressed. I don't know where these came from.

The table and chairs are Etsy purchases.

Here's another look in the kitchen from the other angle.

You see the dolls, Winifred and Minerva, here. They go by Winnie and Minnie. I made these dolls the in mid 2000s. This house is perfect for them, but they do get impatient with the pace of renovations at times.

The livingroom has wood plank floors. I cut paint stirring sticks, glued them staggered onto a piece of plastic. Then I used arisol spray stain and varish.

The chairs were part of a set marketed by Dritz, the sewing notions company, intended as collectable pin cushions. Again, these items were in my junk, bought and stashed away a couple decades ago, without knowledge or plans but perfect for this application.

The curtains are a lining fabric from my stash. You can see on the ceiling where I took out the staircase.

I'd like to enhance this room by doing the floor over with a lighter stain, maybe different curtains and I'm looking at how I could make a little fireplace.

The bathroom came out pretty good, with a nice color scheme carried through. I has wrapping paper wallpaper and fixtures from Etsy. The tile I cut on the laser, then painted each individually. I'd have to have a lot of time on my hands to do more with this room.

The bedroom has contact paper walls. It not just pink, there is a little texture to it. I have the parts to assemble into a bed and I have fabric selected to make a miniature quilt when I have patience for this again.
